As a longtime fan of Mid-Century Modern architecture and design, when I learned that this shrine that is a ten minute walk and an elevator ride from my apartment in Fort George had just had its mosaic work restored in February, I finally decided to go in and check it out! I was not disappointed – it’s a beautiful, serene space and does indeed feature some impressive tile work, a combination of 24 carat gold and different types of marble. The murals depict Mother Cabrini’s life and work – she was sent to America from Italy to help recent immigrants, and is now the patron saint of immigrants. A wax reliquary of Mother Cabrini lies in a glass coffin under the main skylight, where she can gaze at the heavens.

If you’re interested in going, the chapel is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 to 5 and is located at 701 Fort Washington Avenue. Take the A train to 190 St and take the elevator up to Fort Washington Ave, take a left and it’s a block and a half.

Plenty of other things to do nearby, obviously the Heather Garden at Fort Tryon Park, which is beautiful year round, and the Cloisters, which is a blog post unto itself!
